What is Rapid Prototyping?

How does Rapid Prototyping Work?

Rapid prototyping is a technology that takes a three-dimensional computer model and builds a three dimensional part by building layers upon layer of material. Its speed and low cost allow design teams to confirm their new designs early and frequently in the process.

1 Start with a 3 dimension computer model. Typically created in 3D CAD products like SolidWorks, Rhino, Pro/E, Mechanical Desktop
2 From 3D CAD, an STL file is exported. Typically done as a "File Save As …". Xpress3D CAD Add-ins perform this step automatically.
3 The STL file is then translated into hundreds (or even thousands) of cross sectional data.
4 Starting with the bottom slice, the prototyping machine builds each slice upon the previous, until all the slices are built and the prototype is complete.

What processes are available from RedEye Express?

RedEye Express currently supports quoting for four different rapid prototyping technologies. The four technologies are Stereolithography (SLA), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Z Corp. three-dimensional printing (3DP) The material selections for each process vary. Please look at the appropriate process pages to see what materials are available for each process.

What is Rapid Prototyping Used For?

Click Here for an Instant Price Quote Rapid prototyping is currently being used for many different applications. Some of the applications that rapid prototyping is used for are:

Visual Aids and Concept Verification - the ability to create 3D models quickly allows design teams, vendors and customers to help point out design flaws and to analyze a part for aesthetics, ergonomics and manufacturability. Prototypes allow changes to be made more quickly and with more certainty than using 3D CAD exclusively.

Form and Fit Models - the increased accuracy of many of the rapid prototyping technologies allows designers to analyze how well multiple components or even full assemblies work together.

Functional Models - advancements in material properties permit parts to be built with materials similar to production plastics allowing for functional testing of models before production has begun.

Rapid Tooling - rapid prototyping technologies enable designers to make production quality parts without committing the time and cost to production molds. Rapid prototype tools can be used to make part quantities ranging from one to several hundred.

Rapid prototyping is one of the most compelling and effective ways to communicate the look and "feel" of a new product design to others. If a picture is worth a thousand words - imagine what a prototype in your hand is worth.
